This week's choice is for those who enjoy watching television and are not queasy about seeing humor in admitting that it is a part of their everyday life.Television Without Pity (TWoP) is staffed by "recappers" who write, as you might guess, recaps of episodes; recaps usually appear within a week of airdate. Most commentaries are witty, with a tongue-in-cheek mentality. TWoP staff appear genuinely interested in the shows they recap. Irony reigns, but so does detail. Digital eyes roll at characters, dialogue, or plot devices that erode the IQ scores of even the most dedicated fan. As the site states, "Our mandate is, more or less, to give people a place to revel in their guilty televisual pleasures. In most cases, we have a complex love/hate relationship with the show, and this site is a way for us to work through those feelings."
Content is organized by show. Attractive TWoP logos aid visual organization of the site. Dramas and so-called reality shows dominate the offerings. Alias, 24, The West Wing, The Gilmore Girls, and The Osbournes are a few examples. You, the viewer-reader, can grade the recap, with results averaged out to provide a single report-card grade.
The work by TWoP recappers is one facet of the site. The other is a rather large discussion forum also organized by show. Most shows have dozens of topic areas and thousands of individual postings. An FAQ page appears to pretty clearly outline the rules of posting behavior for these forums. Visitors can read forum postings. Posting on the forum requires membership (free). The site includes a search engine - and a mascot: "Tubey," the lucky cat.
